Hey Witches! I wanted to make a quick post on something I have been noticing on the Facebook page lately. I try to keep our little world accepting of all and I do realize you can’t make everyone happy. Here and there I have noticed some negativity creeping in. Sometimes it comes from people who just want to cause issues, just little tricksters bouncing around causing mayhem but there are those who are of the mindset that only their way is the right way.
I have said it before and I’ll say it again, no witch has the right to tell another witch how to witch! I read a comment the other day where someone said, “Well I know, my mother was a grand priestess of such and such. A priestess of what? Please understand that most witches don’t follow a hierarchy at all. I get mentions of, “In traditional witchcraft…” and I have to ask the question… Who’s traditional witchcraft? From where exactly do you mean? This phrase alone suggests that there is a specific starting point in recorded history that can be pinpointed. I can tell you for sure that for human magick there is.
Imagine, if you will, the first modern humans walking this world around 200,000 years ago. What did they want? To eat, to have shelter, to be warm and safe, to procreate? In my opinion magick started when the first humans realized they were. They started religions in the same way, who do you thank for a bountiful feast and healthy children? How do you explain those who can do the unexplainable? Is it magick to create something like a small innovative community from nothing but a vision of it? As humanity grew in numbers and migrated to different areas of the planet over hundreds and thousands of years the magick stayed with them as a similar root in my opinion. Each grew into a different branch of the same tree. Each one complex and varied.
This goes for anything from religion, gender roles, social constructs, government and ruling. We are the same but different.
What is traditional witchcraft to one will be different for another.
What makes it different?
Climate
Needs
Local ingredients
Belief Systems
Community Standards
Spiritual Ideals
Even Popular Culture and what’s in style or political at any particular time.
Witchcraft did not begin with an Englishman who based it off of Christianity. Karma is not a new Wiccan invention. Magick existed in other cultures not just European cultures. Even the pentacle has had varied meaning through history, the oldest being found in the ruins of Mesopotamia from 3500 BC. At some points it has meant royalty and the known continents at the time. Nothing is cut and dry.
I guess my biggest reason for writing this is to help people understand the enormity of human existence and just how far back it goes. I do this because I believe magick is innate in all of us so if that’s the case (in my opinion) human magick has existed for around 200,000 years.
What is true for one person may not be true for another. Something I personally like to do when I see something new is to search for the history and even the etymology behind something and it’s name. You can learn a lot that way. Be aware and be kind! Never stop learning!
Happy Crafting!
